6 things to see in Alcúdia on holiday

02/02/2019

Are you coming to enjoy a getaway to the Mallorcan island this year? Make a note of these 6 things to see in Alcúdia on holiday and we'll organise them for you!

Alcúdia Beach

In the number one spot is, of course, the beautiful Alcúdia Beach, the largest in the Balearic Islands. It is a must, especially if you come on holiday in summer. This beach, with fine sand and turquoise waters, runs along the entire bay from the port of the town of Alcúdia to Artà. It is one of the most famous beaches in Mallorca, and no wonder. It is very wide, has a great length, and a multitude of services around and on the beach itself: water slides, sun lounger service, restaurants or toilets and showers, among others.

Another remarkable aspect of Alcúdia Beach is the shallowness of its waters, which allows us to enter the water for several metres without the water reaching our knees. It is an idyllic beach, beautiful, relaxing and full of activities and all the necessary amenities, but if you are not satisfied with just one beach, take a look at our post about the 4 best beaches and coves in Alcúdia

Old walled town centre

The town of Alcúdia stands out not only for its beaches, but also for its walled historic centre. It is a picturesque place, entirely surrounded by ancient medieval walls, with cobbled streets that lead us through a magnificent route to discover the most emblematic places and monuments of Alcúdia. These include the Church of Sant Jaume, the walls themselves (with different "portas" that we must visit), the Alcúdia Town Hall, the restaurants and, without a doubt, the beautiful stately homes that complete the beautiful scenery.

The old town is one of the essential things to see in Alcúdia on holidays, but if you come in July, take the opportunity to also discover its history through a dramatised visit.

S'Albufera Park

Another of the 6 best things to see in Alcúdia during your holidays is the renowned natural park of S'Albufera, declared as such in 1988. As well as being a protected park with flora and fauna of impressive value, S'Albufera is also a Wetland of International Importance, as well as a "Site of Community Importance" and a "Special Protection Area for birds" according to the Natura 2000 Network and the Ramsar Convention.

Anyone you ask on the island will know about the importance of the Alcúdia park, which is also the largest wetland area of all the Balearic Islands, with a total park area of 1,646.48 hectares (mostly wetlands).

Visits are free of charge, but you must give advance notice and ask for a "permit" at reception. The opening hours of the Parc Natural S'Albufera are from 9 am to 6 pm between April and September, and from 9 am to 5 pm between October and March.

Church of Sant Jaume

If you come to Alcúdia on holiday, a visit to the mythical Church of Sant Jaume is a must. The monument, a great historical church that began to be built by King Jaume II, suffered several "setbacks" during its history, including the collapse of its vault in 1870. It was not until 1893 that the famous church became the beauty it is today.

The church, in neo-Gothic style, also houses a small parish museum inside, where you can see various antique objects, paintings and works of art of great historical value.

Alcúdia weekly market

Mallorca is an island of local and artisan markets, and Alcúdia has one of the best and most popular. The town's large weekly market is one of the main experiences and things to see in Alcúdia on holiday, so if your well-deserved days out include a Tuesday or Sunday, you're in luck!

The market, like all markets on the island, starts early in the morning at around 9:00 hrs and lasts until around 14:00 hrs. Held in the beautiful walled old town, you'll find countless traditional stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, seasonal flowers, handmade products and typical Mallorcan food and sweets.

Sa Bassa Blanca Museum

Finally, we cannot forget the incredible Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, run by the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation (established in 1993). A place full of charm, totally integrated with nature, with large sculptural gardens and, of course, home to countless works of art.

It is a magical place where art and nature merge, and which is, inescapably, one of the best things to see in Alcúdia on holiday, and also in all the Balearic Islands. Everything in the museum is incredible, but without a doubt the gardens and the "Nins" collection stand out, which has also been declared a Catalogued Asset of the Historical Heritage of the Balearic Islands.
