Alcudia is in the north of Mallorca, an area renowned for its spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters and fine white sand, but do not overlook the history of Alcudia; it is very much part of what makes this town so special.
Alcudia is surrounded by different places that you will love. The port of Alcudia is one of the largest and most beautiful in Mallorca, but without a doubt, do not miss out on the chance to visit the wonderful historical monuments when visiting Alcudia on holiday.
The history of Alcudia is long and illustrious. The first historical data is from the pre-Talaiotic era and Talaiotic era dating from approx. 2000BC to 123BC. The name is derived from the Talaiots, the most abundant and distinctive structures from the prehistoric period of the Balearic Islands. Constructed using large stone blocks, transported without aid of the wheel, or lifting equipment, these incredible buildings do not rely on mortar to fix or consolidate their walls.
After this, the Romans came to Alcudia. They chose the area, because from the vantage points on the surrounding hills, they could see large ships entering and leaving the Bay of Alcudia; allowing them to control the trade routes. However, when the Romans founded the city, it was not known as Alcudia, but Pollentia and, in fact, during that time it was the capital of Mallorca. The ruins of the Roman city can be seen today, where you can find both Roman theatres and stately homes, these buildings demonstrate the prosperous economic growth of that time in, and around, the city of Alcudia.
The barbarians occupied the island of Mallorca in the 5th century, they ransacked the city which made way for the eventual Arab occupancy of the city. It was the Arabs who gave Alcudia its modern name, though to be honest, it was more a settlement than a city at that time. In 1229, when Mallorca was incorporated in the Crown of Aragon the area continued to prosper and in 1289, to ensure that Alcudia was not reconquered again, the city was closed off and protected by some of the most impressive walls in Mallorca.
Thanks to the rich history of Alcudia you can find many monuments to visit and explore; there is a rich legacy to be seen and appreciated by visitors to the area.
Apart from the historical monuments of Alcudia that we highly recommend, there are other beautiful places to visit in Alcudia. For example, the Oratory of Santa Ana, the hermitage of Our Lady of Victory or the cave of San Martín.
Alcudia is the gateway to the Victoria peninsula, which separates the bays of Alcudia and Pollensa, making it a very a strategic and important location on the island. The walls surrounding Alcudia were built at the order of Jaume II, with the intention of protecting Alcudia from Arab pirates who at that time made frequent attacks on the area.
The Alcudia wall has two gates. The Mallorca gate is directed towards Palma and exits the town in the direction of the interior of the island of Mallorca. On the other hand, the Moll gate faces towards Port of Alcudia, providing an exit towards the sea.
The construction of the Alcudia wall took more than 60 years, finally finishing in 1362, but in the 16th century further reinforcing works were undertaken. As a result of this remodelling, a new gate was built, together with a stone bridge, which is still visible to this day.
As in Palma de Mallorca, in 1940 a large part of the Alcudia wall was failing into disrepair and was demolished on the orders of the local council; nevertheless, visible parts of that original wall can still be found around Alcudia.
The centre of Alcudia is in the old historic centre of the town, its irregular and meandering streets appear like a perfect maze. Along with the Alcudia town hall and various other buildings, a harmonious and similar architectural style can still be observed among many of the buildings in and around Alcudia.

You will also find a market in Alcudia on Tuesdays and Sundays, where you can meander through its many stalls where you will find man typical Mallorcan products for sale.
In the medieval area of the old town of Alcudia is the Church of Sant Jaume. Also known as the Parish Church of Santiago. Originally built as part of the fortification of Alcudia, its roof originally served as a look out, but in 1870, after its roof collapsed, rendering it useless, it was rebuilt in the neo gothic style.
