The Formentor Lighthouse

The construction of Formentor began in 1857, first, the access roads also had to be built and more than 200 people were involved in their construction. Finally, six years later the lighthouse was completed and remains in operation to this day. The Formentor Lighthouse itself is rather formidable, at 22 meters high, it stands 210 meters above sea level so that its beacon can be seen from far away.

Cycling in Majorca

One of the best-known routes in Mallorca is the ride up to the Formentor Lighthouse. Mallorca has many cycling routes, but this route is one of the most special, the views are outstanding. However, it must be said that this ride is not ideal for anyone new to the sport of cycling.

You can start from either Puerto Pollensa or Alcúdia both are equally interesting. Riding up the beautiful road that leads to Formentor you will enjoy some truly breath-taking views, as well as the unique flora and fauna of the area. This is one ride that we guarantee will not fail to impress.

The cycling route to the Formentor Lighthouse is quite challenging and suits more experienced cyclists who are prepared to take on its steep climbs. But if you want to do a shorter route, or feel you are not quite fully prepared, then why not take a tour of the Albufera de Mallorca or the less strenuous climb up to L’ Victoria? These two are perfect if you're looking for a gentler excursion.

Another option is to enjoy the cycling routes around the Bays Alcúdia and Pollensa, these rides follow the coastline and are an ideal summer option, you can take a cooling and refreshing dip in the hot hours of the day, cool off, and afterwards continue with your ride.

The Formentor Sunset

One of the most spectacular moments at Formentor Lighthouse is when the sun sets. Going to watch the sunset in Formentor is one of those ‘must do’ plans whilst on holiday in Mallorca. Although the route and the site are beautiful at any time of the day, it is when night falls that the views are incredible, and the light is simply indescribable.

Although access by car to the road is not possible in the hours just before sunset, a shuttle bus is available. In addition, at the Formentor Lighthouse, you will find a bar where you can enjoy a snack and a drink while you enjoy watching the sun go down. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy an evening with friends, as a couple, or with your family.

On the winding road that leads to the Formentor Lighthouse, it is very common to find goats and other animals. They roam wild around the Formentor lighthouse but watch out! They don’t have a problem getting close to humans, especially if you have food!

The Formentor Beach

The beach of Formentor lies on the peninsula of Formentor and is a perfect place to disconnect for the day. This sandy beach is where you can enjoy some of the clearest blue crystalline waters of Mallorca. But that's not all, the beach has plenty of amenities.

In summer, the Formentor beach has umbrellas and hammocks that you can lie on, although there is plenty of shade to be found in the pine forest that surrounds the entire beach and that reaches almost to the shoreline. This makes Formentor beach one of the most emblematic beaches in all of Mallorca.

Plus, there is a car park right beside the Formentor beach and a beach bar where you can enjoy refreshments, snacks or even a good paella. You choose!

For a day out on the beach, Formentor is an ideal location, although don’t forget there are other beaches where you can enjoy the sun and sea of Mallorca, such as the beautiful virgin beach of Coll Baix.
